New Area Commanders to take up post

Friday, 5th February 2010
Two senior officers who both started their careers as police cadets 25 years ago are taking up posts as new Area Commanders in Stirling and Clackmannanshire.

Superintendent Alan Douglas

Superintendent Alan Douglas will be in charge of policing operations within Clackmannanshire, following the retiral after 30 years' service of Superintendent Andrew Price. Supt Douglas is currently based within Strategic Development.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Bye has been promoted to the rank of Superintendent from his current position as Director of Intelligence and will be responsible for Stirling Area Command. He will take over from Superintendent David Flynn who is moving to a post within Specialist Support Services. Inspector Stephen Sneddon will be promoted to the rank of temporary Chief Inspector to become Director of Intelligence. He is currently in charge of the Policing Management Unit.

Detective Chief Inspector Gordon Dawson is also on the move. He will become Sub Area Commander for Grangemouth. He is currently responsible for CID Operations and Serious Crime. Chief Inspector Gary Lawrie, currently Grangemouth Sub Area Commander, will move to Strategic Development promoted to the rank of temporary Superintendent.

Supt Douglas said he was looking forward to taking up the challenges of policing in Clackmannanshire. He said: "My priorities will centre around providing highly visible, highly effective community policing in Clackmannanshire tackling the issues which impact on the public - anti-social behaviour, disorder, drug dealing and road safety. Working closely with partners within Clackmannanshire will also be a priority so we can make a real difference to the safety of communities."

Supt Douglas joined Central Scotland Police as a cadet in 1985 and has worked in a variety of operational and corporate roles. He was the project manager for the construction of the new Falkirk Area Command office, has been seconded to HM Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland and served previously as Dunblane Sub Area Commander.

Supt Bye said he was excited at the prospect of taking on policing responsibilities for an area such as Stirling Area Command which contains such a diverse range of communities. He said: "The challenges of policing the busy city centre of Stirling to the more rural communities are significant, but my aim would be to deliver that in a way that meets the needs of the public but also tackles those issues of greatest concern in the most effective way possible."

Supt Bye also joined as cadet in 1984. His career to date has mostly been within CID in both divisional and specialist intelligence roles. He was the deputy Senior Investigating Officer in the investigation into the murder of Hilary Crowley in 2004 and has been behind significant enhancements in how intelligence is gathered and used to ensure police officers are targeted to problem issues and areas.

Assistant Chief Constable John Mauger said: "I look forward to the contribution that our new Area Commanders and other senior officers in news roles will make to communities across the Forth Valley, with the priorities being building public confidence and trust in our policing."
