Bike Safe Initiative
Wednesday, 03rd September 2008
Central Scotland Police motorcyclists, road policing and road safety officers were joined by colleagues from Strathclyde, Northern and Tayside forces for a major initiative aimed at highlighting bike safety.
The event took place at Tyndrum on Sunday August 24 and was carried out in support of an ACPOS Bikesafe activity weekend.
Joining the motorcyclists and road safety teams was the Strathclyde air support crew on board their force helicopter.
Poor weather contributed to a quieter than normal weekend on the roads as far as motorcycle traffic was concerned. However, more than 80 vehicles were stopped and their riders spoken to û and more than 60 offences being picked up. These included warnings for speeding as well as a number of conditional fixed penality notices for excessive speed and insurance offences.
Sergeant Graham Adamson, of the Central Scotland Police motorcycle team, said: "It was a quiet weekend on the roads due to the weather conditions, but we maintained a highly visible presence and spoke to a good number of members of the public.
"A number of riders were warned over their speed whilst others were issued with fixed penalty notices. Speed is a major contributory factor in road collisions - that can be heightened in poor weather - and the aim of our operation was to highlight that fact."
